PADI shared a really good post yesterday, about the common mistakes of divers/snorkellers over tightening their mask strap & how doing so can make for an unpleasant dive experience. We actually re-shared their post on our Facebook page as well, but in case you missed it, here's a bit of an insight into the importance of loosening up a little ;p
So, you've got your mask on, looking like a responsible citizen of the world, but wait a minute! Is that strap cutting off circulation to your brain? How tight is too tight when it comes to securing your mask in place? Let's dive into the risks of over-tightening that strap!
Strap it on, but not too tight!
Picture this: you're out and about, mask firmly in place, but suddenly you feel like your ears are being pulled into another dimension. That's the sign of a strap that's tighter than your budget after a shopping spree. Over-tightening your mask can lead to discomfort, headaches, and even skin irritation. Remember, you want to protect yourself from germs, not turn into a human bobblehead!
Breathing is kind of important, you know?
When you cinch that strap so tight that you can barely open your mouth to take a sip of water, you might be overdoing it. Breathing is kind of essential for, you know, staying alive. An overly tight mask can restrict airflow, making it harder to catch your breath. So, loosen up that strap and let your lungs do their thing!
Don't let the mask win the tug-of-war
Have you ever felt like your mask was in a battle with your face, and the mask was winning? If you're constantly readjusting and tugging at your mask to relieve the pressure, it might be too tight. Your mask should stay in place without feeling like it's trying to give you a facelift. Let's keep the tug-of-war on the playground, not on your face!
Listen to your face (yes, your face can talk)
Your face is a great communicator, believe it or not. If you start noticing red marks, indentations, or even bruises from your mask strap, it's time to reassess the situation. Your face shouldn't look like it just went a few rounds with a heavyweight boxer. Give your skin a break and find that sweet spot where your mask is snug but not strangling you!
So, there you have it, folks! When it comes to mask straps, a little snugness is good, but too tight is a recipe for discomfort and potential health risks. Remember, your mask is there to protect you and others, not to give you a headache or turn you into a fashion-forward chipmunk. Find that balance, keep it comfy, and stay safe out there!
